A FOREVER GREEN FIELD AT TRUMAN HIGH…3 YEARS DOWN THE ROAD

An interview with the Athletic Director at Truman Senior High School in Bristol, PA

December, 2006, Bristol, PA. George Collins, Athletic Director for Truman Senior High School was a decision maker in the choice of Forever Green Athletic Fields for the installation of a synthetic turf football field in 2003. At least, that’s what they thought they were getting. Three years of field usage showed they were getting so much more. In an interview with Cynthia Orr from Forever Green Athletic Fields, Collins commented, “It has provided our school with a tremendous amount of flexibility and has provided all our athletes with a safe environment.”

Collins continued, “The advantages of the Forever Green artificial turf are that we can play multiple events on the same day and can maximize the use of the stadium since we can have many different sports use the stadium. We broadened the use of our field with field hockey, soccer, lacrosse and football contests. We never realized that we would be able to use it for PE and intramural programs as well.”

“The kids have really enjoyed it. Visiting teams have expressed enthusiasm and excitement as well to play on this surface. In three years, we have had about 300-350 athletic contests and, in those three years, I can say nothing negative about the field. “

Collins went on to give an example of the usage the week before. “Within the last one and a half weeks, we had 2 double header, District 1 Boys Soccer playoff games, a District 1 Girls Field Hockey playoff game and, last night, a double header A and AAA boys Soccer First Round PIAA. We had great attendance with about 1500-2000 people watching the games. The field really enhanced the level of play. We could never have done this on a natural grass field.”

As for the impressions of the field from within the school, Collins added, “The field presents a wonderful challenge to maximize usage. We first thought we were installing a football field and now we use it from 7:30 AM to 9 PM for everything. I have challenged my staff to wear it out and, in three years, have not succeeded.”

“It seems to have brought a newfound sense of pride in our school in terms of people coming to this beautiful field, particularly with the new stands. The field has been great for graduation as well.”

About Synthetic Turf: Synthetic Turf is the general name for artificial grass of any type. Developed in the late 50s and early 60s, the early installations were a thin carpet over a hard cement and/or sand surface. The ability of educational institutions to use the fields repeatedly in all weather conditions caused the industry to grow and develop. Today, the older turf products are no longer available having been replaced by thicker, softer, more life-like longer blades of artificial grass with and without rubber infill over a variety of sub-bases. The installations result in varied surfaces with a range of safety levels (GMAX Test). The new generation of synthetic turf is safer, softer and longer lasting than earlier products and has enabled educational institutions to expand their play hours significantly
